Abstract:
As is known, the heat transportation follows the classical Fourier's law, and the temperature distribution is governed by a parabollic equation. This fact leads to a paradox, the heat pulse propagates at an infinite speed. In the normal condition, this "paradox" may be explained away by the rapid decay of heat waves. This paper presents a review on the finite time thermodynamics for energy systems (including heat engines, refrigerators, heat pumps, chemical reactions and some other processes) with respect to the following aspects: the study of Newton's law systems, an analysis of thermal resistance and other irreversible loss models as well as finite reservoirs and source-type reservoirs, and finally, the application of thermodyliamic machinery design and its evaluation.

In this paper, some important mechanisms of turbulence proposed in literature are reviewed, which include Brown-Roshko's large-scale vortex structure developed in the mixing shear flow, Perry and Chong's 'A' vortex in turbulent boundary layer and the author's general mechanism of turbulence in 3-dimensional turbulent flow with respect to the vortex structure of pulsative vorticity convection and diffusion. This paper gives an overview on the new smart materials such as electro-rheological fluids and the ultra-advanced intelligent composite material as well as its principle and future prospects.The compofites with embedded optical fibres-the smart skins are introduced and the principle,feasibility and application of the fibre optical monitoring system are discussed.
