Abstract:
Spiral wave is a classical example of spatiotemporalpattern, and is important both theoretically and in practice. Itconcerns various fields, such as mathematics, physics,mechanics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, medicine. In this paper,dynamical behaviors of spiral waves are discussed, which include theformation of spiral wave, common forms of spiral wave, the motion of the tipand the breakup of spiral wave. Spiral wave and spatiotemporal chaos areharmful in some actual systems, so their controls are necessary. Thecontrol of spiral wave can be realized by feedback signals and externalforces, and by the adjustment of parameters.

Abstract:
This paper contains a detailed discussion on the HOC(high order compact) method. The historyof the method is reviewed, the strongpoint of the method is pointed out,the basic properties, constructions and its present state are analyzed,together with the recent development. And especially, the mathematicalfoundations of the HOC-type method are discussed by summing up therelationship between the HOC and the rational approximation or Pad\'e-typeapproximations. Abstract:
The polymers commonly used in plastic electronic packagingare apt to absorb moisture in the environment, which greatly affects thereliability of packages. In this article the studies on moisture diffusion process,hygroscopic stresses and moisture-induced vapor pressure arereviewed, with the emphasis on the theoretical analysis,parameter characterization and its experimental measurement and validation,as well as the finite element simulation. Based on the mechanism analysisand experimental results, it can be seen that moisture absorption of polymermaterials in plastic packages can degrade its reliability significantly.More and more researches are focused on the study of moisture absorption,diffusion and evaporation processes, and on the experimentalmethods to measure and characterize the above processes.

Abstract:
Crazing is a special phenomenon in glassy polymers. It concerns not only themechanism of plastic deformation and toughness, but also the damagemechanism of polymers, which is a bridge to link the micromechanism ofdamage and macroscopic failure of polymers. The initiation, growth andbreakdown of craze are open problems for scientists of materials scienceand solid mechanics. Although extensive researches have be devoted to thistopic and considerable advances in the experimental, theoretical andnumerical investigations have been made in the past decades, there isstill no systematic theoretical framework to describe the crazing ofpolymers, and people have just started to link the fundamental knowledge ofmicromechanics to the phenomenon of crazing of polymers,and this kind of studies have not yet played a key role in guiding the blend design. Inthis paper, we introduce the advances in polymer crazing in thepast decade. A brief introduction to the structure, the initiation criterion, thegrowth and the breakdown of crazing is presented first. Emphasis of thepaper is on the recent advances of the applications offracture mechanics, damage mechanics, micromechanics and moleculardynamics in the studies on the crazing of glassy polymers.

Abstract:
The interfacial bonding strength is a crucial factor in determining ultimate mechanical properties andperformances of coatings and thin films, and the life of a specimen orworkpiece, apart from the external factors, such as loading conditions.So the evaluation of theinterfacial bond strength for a coating is an important task. However,it is difficult due to the variety ofcoating/substrate systems. As a result, a test that works with one film system may not necessarily work withanother. In this paper, the measurement methods for interfacial bonding strength between a coatingand a substrate are reviewed. The tensile test, shear test, bending test,scratch test, indentation test and dynamic test are discussed, andcomparisons are made.

Abstract:
The strength and failure of a laminated composite involvesmany mechanisms and its analysis is very complicated in nature. Manytheories about strength and failure have been proposed in the literature based on differentphysical, mechanical or logical considerations. Their applicabilityshould be put into test with respect to practical problems. A``Failure Olympics'' on composite laminates, supported by the UKEngineering andPhysical Sciences Research Council and the UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers,was launched in 1999, and completed in 2004. This paper briefly reviews andsummarizes the current status of researches on the strength of fiber-reinforcedcomposites based on the results from the ``Failure Olympics", with a discussion onsome topics that need to be addressed in the future development.

Abstract:
Lattice materials are attractive for their light-weight, highspecific strength and high specific stiffness. Together with theirvarious thermomechanical properties, they have applications in ultralight structures, aswell as in impact/blast systems, heat dissipation media,acoustic isolation, microwave absorption structures and actuation.The topology criterion for stretching-dominated materials makes these latticematerials much stiffer and stronger than foams and honeycombs,especially those of low relative density. The types of lattice materialsinclude the octet-truss lattice material and sandwich panels with differernt latticecores, as summarized in this paper. The corresponding manufacturingmethods: the investment casting method and the perforated wrought metal sheet foldingmethod are compared. The mechanical behaviors of latticematerials are discussed in light of the experimental results, and compared with othercellular materials, especially with respect to the critical effects of imperfections tolattices and foams. The applications in actuating and heat transferring and the numerical modeling are introduced. The authors' researchesin carbon fiber reinforced lattice materials are specially addressed, including the3D interlaced carbon fiber reinforced lattice and the interlocked carbonfiber reinforced grids. The recent progresses in stealth carbon fiberreinforced grids are also outlined.

Abstract:
Development and optimization of multifunctional devices for fluidicmanipulation of films, drops, and bubbles require detailed understandingof interfacial phenomena and microhydroodynamic flows. Systems aredistinguished by a large suface to volume ratio and flow at smallReynolds, capillary, and Bond numbers are strongly influenced byboundary effects and therefore amenable to control by a variety ofsurface treatments and surface forces. We review the principlesunderying common techniques for actuation of droplets and films onhomogeneous, chemically patterned, and topologically textured surfacesby modulation of normal or shear stresses.
