Abstract:
This article first gives a brief review on thehistory of various approaches of modeling water waves basedon differing emphases on the main physical parameters involved.It presents a unified theory for modeling unsteady,three-dimensional, fully nonlinear and fully dispersivegravity-capillary waves in water of variable depth. Alsopresented is a Lagrangian-Eulerian hybrid numerical method forevaluating run-ups of nonlinear waves on sloping beach.Applications of these methods are illustrated with severalproblems of fundamental significance.

Abstract:
For the seismic response analysis of long-spanstructures, the characteristics of the response spectrummethod, the random vibration method and the time historymethod are compared in this paper. It is found that thespatially varying effects of the ground motions, especiallythe wave passage effect, have great influences on the dynamicresponses of long-span structures. For seismic analysis ofmulti-degrees-of-freedom, multiply supported structuressubjected to spatially varying ground motions, the responsespectrum method is difficult to implement, while the randomvibration method has great advantages. For nonlinear seismicanalysis of long-span structures under very strong groundmotions, the time history method is still the preferredapproach nowadays.

Abstract:
Recently, the finite element method (FEM) hasbeen widely applied in cutting process, and plays animportant role in the investigations of technicalparameters and chip mechanism. This paper reviews thestate-of-the-arts in this field, discusses some keyaspects in the FEM simulation of cutting process, includingchip plastic formation, thermo-mechanical coupling, thecontact and friction between workpiece and tool, chipseparation criteria, and residual stress and strain. Atlast, the new trends of FEM simulation for cutting processare predicted.

Abstract:
The scaling of structure functions in turbulenceis discussed. The scaling exponents of structure functionsobserved in experiments and numerical simulations areanomalous. This fact was interpreted by many authors as aclear evidence against Kolmogorov 1941 (K41) theory. It isconcluded that the inertial-range scaling in isotropicturbulence is anomalous. Recently we published papers todemonstrate a different point of view on the inertial-rangescaling. The scaling exponents observed in turbulence with afinite Reynolds number, is not the same as the inertial-rangescaling exponents, due to the finite Reynolds number effects.While the finite Reynolds number effects are considered, theanomalous scaling exponents obtained in experiments ornumerical simulations are not inconsistent to K41 normalscaling. The inertial-range scaling in isotropic turbulencemay be normal. This result should have important consequencein the field of turbulence, since the fact of the inertial-rangescaling being normal or anomalous implies completely differentunderstanding of the physics of turbulence.

Abstract:
In the course of development of viscous fluid dynamics, the simplified theories of the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations, corresponding algorithms and applications form the frontier and the core of viscous fluid dynamics in different historical period. With that point in mind we review here some advances in the classical boundary layer, multilayer boundary layer (triple deck), interacting boundary layer and diffusion parabolized NS equations theories and corresponding algorithms and applications. The relationship between those theories and experiments, a note to simplifying calculation of turbulent flow and some problems of combining numerical simulation with physical analysis are also reviewed.

Abstract:
The status of online identification for gas-liquidtwo-phase flow regime using the parameter fluctuation isreviewed. This paper mainly discusses the mechanism for thetwo-phase flow parameter fluctuation, the application ofwavelet theory, feature extraction and analysis of thefluctuation, and realizing methods. In particular, itemphasizes both the statistical and nonlinear analysis andtheir relationship with flow regimes. Furthermore, the neuralnetwork method to identify flow regimes and its developmentare reviewed and discussed in detail. The research advance isdiscussed in the selection of fluctuating parameters, thephysical interpretation of the fluctuations and the identificationmethod.

Abstract:
Recent observations on the dynamics of crack andfault rupture are described, together with related theoryand simulations in the framework of continuum elastodynamics.Topics include configurational instabilities of tensile crackfronts (crack front waves, disordering, side-branching), theconnection between frictional slip laws and modes of rupturepropagation in earth faulting, especially conditions forformation of self-healing slip pulses, and the rich faultingand cracking phenomena that result along dissimilar materialinterfaces due to coupling between slippage and normal stressalteration.
