A state-of-art survey in the rapidly developing field of meso-mechanics, including its definition, main research issues and the domain of applications, is presented here. Emphasis is also placed on the new advances in meso-damage mechanics. The future research trends and opportunities of meso-mechanics are outlined in the final part of the paper.
