Abstract: Looking into the 21st century, environmental problems are the most challenging subject which mankind have to confront.We mainly address the history of environmental mechanics development, a new branch in the discipline of mechanics, in the present paper. Furthermore,crucial issues and research directions for environmental mechanics are proposed as well. Finally,we illustrate these issues by a couple of typical examples.
