Abstract: This paper deals with the mechanical theory of the microcrack shielding mechanism and its major conclusions. The validity and the applicable regions are determined for the four assumptions used in two techniques in the investigation of the theory. The controversies among the previous researches are discussed. The conclusions derived by the present authors are introduced and the extensions to those for composite materials and bimaterials are treated.
