Abstract: in this paper, proposals arc made concerning the roles that engineering mechanics may play in the exploitation of the western area of China. These cover communication and transportation, the exploitation and use of natural resources, the development of an agriculture that will need less water, the establishment of some new type of agriculture and animal husbandry, and related problems on educations.
